When we hear the word “evangelism,” many of us understandably recoil. It’s a word that has so much baggage that it’s tempting to drop the word from our spiritual vocabulary and perhaps to drop the whole idea of evangelism altogether. But in today’s sermon, we’ll try to strip away the baggage and explore the original meaning of the “e-word.” In the process, we’ll discover what evangelism meant to Jesus, the surprising way he did it, and what his example means for us today. A central part of Jesus’ mission was to announce, inaugurate, embody, describe, and guide us into a bold new reality that he calls the “Kingdom of God.” It’s safe to say that the “Kingdom” is what Jesus is all about. And as his followers, the “Kingdom” is what Jesus calls us to be all about. So how do we do that? What does it look like for us to live into this “Kingdom”? Life is busy—between work, family responsibilities, and the never-ending to-do list, it’s easy to feel like we’re just trying to survive. And in that whirlwind, if we’re not careful, we can wind up neglecting our relationship with our romantic partner or with our other loved ones.
